What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a medical condition that affects the normal curvature of the spine. A normal spine curves forward and backward at certain points. With scoliosis, the spine curves to the side rather than forward and backward. The onset of scoliosis usually occurs right before puberty or during a growth spurt. In most cases, the symptoms of scoliosis are mild and treatment is not always needed. Severe scoliosis, however, can be painful and debilitating and surgical intervention might be needed.
What is the Difference Between Non-Invasive and Invasive Treatments?
Invasive treatment for scoliosis involves surgery to correct an abnormal curve of the spine, while non invasive treatment is more conservative and does not involve surgery. If surgery is needed, there are three different surgical approaches that can be taken depending on the needs of the patient.
One type of surgery referred to as fusion involves permanently fusing certain vertebrae together to form a solid bone. Another method, used for children, involves anchoring rods to the spine to help correct the spine’s curvature as the child grows. However, fusion might still be needed after the child is done growing. Finally, there is a third surgical approach that involves putting pressure on one side of the spinal curve to reduce curvature and straighten the spine.
What Types of Treatment are Available?
Custom back braces have traditionally been the nonsurgical method for treating scoliosis, but today other options such as chiropractic care are also available. At our medical office in Clearwater, FL, non invasive scoliosis treatment involves a variety of chiropractic techniques to strengthen the body’s core, decrease pressure on the nervous system and reduce pain. Chiropractic care can also help patients who experience breathing difficulty by increasing their ability to take deep breaths.
